— Chapter 20 —

* * *

Bob laid a short list of opponents in my hand. We discussed them in private before deciding on a rival who was a rising star at the Randall Corporation. Bernhardt Schmidt was looking for a big promotion. He had been impressing his bosses with his work and had been in charge of the raid that never was. He was smart, resourceful, and was openly gunning for Bob's position. Bob reasoned it was only a matter of time before he would be a real threat.

I commed Bonnie and Delen for a meet. For my own protection, I wore a phony hairpiece and mustache along with dark-tinted glasses. The getup drew giggles from the ladies when I joined them.

"Anything to keep me off facial recognition."

Bonnie smirked. "You can always get a new face."

"I can't. I'm locked into that job. I can do a thousand times as much good from there as I can from out here. Just take a look, I got an executive to fund two resistance assassins."

"I guess there is that. So, what do you have for us?"

I held up my comm for a transfer of data. "His name is Bernhardt Schmidt. He's an up and comer in the Randall Corporation."

Delen said, "That's the one who almost bagged us, isn't it?"

"It is. He's smart and talented. I've given the official account of his security detail, but I wouldn't trust it. He's likely to have added several security layers of his own."

"So, we just go in for a cut?"

"There's more. We need to stash some implicating data. That data will make it look as though he was the one who warned off your cell."

"Wouldn't that have made him look bad?"

"It would, but we added data to give a purpose for taking the risk. He was trying to unseat his boss, knowing his boss would take the brunt of the blow for the botched operation. Bernie was held up as being a mastermind of planning while his boss was said to be lax on security, thereby possibly allowing a leak."

Bonnie asked, "Do we dispose of the body? Make it look like an accident? Leave it where it falls?"

"An accident, of course, would be preferred, but not necessary. The execs already know there are assassins out there, so if time is a restriction, the old cut and run will have to do."

Bonnie chuckled. "Cut and run? You're starting to sound like you've done this before."

"Not to humans. But I did gig several thousand Togmal in the war."

I had let the fact slip before realizing what I was saying. A look of self-disgust on my face only reinforced the blunder.

Bonnie reached across and patted my hand. "Don't worry. Your secrets are safe here. You aren't the only one with a new face. Those scars said all I needed to know."

Delen asked, "Why didn't you have them done over with your face change?"

I shrugged. "Vanity? I wanted to keep something of myself. I had to argue to have them put back.
